Known throughout the world as the Headquarters of Flat racing, Newmarket has two courses, the Rowley Mile and the July course.
On the Rowley Mile, all races from five to ten furlongs are run on the straight with a marked dip over a furlong out with a stiff uphill finish. All races over a mile and a quarter are run right handed. The track requires stamina and balance from the thoroughbred.
All meeting taking place during June, July and August are run on the July Course, with a straight eight furlongs and a right handed turn for races beyond this trip. There is a steep climb throughout the final furlong which is even stiffer than the Rowley Mile.
The track drains well and the going rarely becomes heavy.

Overview
An extremely sharp left handed national hunt course that is only a mile in circumference on the hurdles track and a mile and a quarter over fences. The fences are easy but there is a stiff uphill finish. Nippy front runners are often suited. Mudlarks tend to do well here as the ground has a tendency to become very testing due to the clay surface.

An undulating left-handed course measuring a mile and a half. There are plenty of twists and turns here so course knowledge is vital. Hence the reason why local trainers invariably do well.
Stamina is the key as conditions become extremely testing in wet conditions. The fences are fairly easy but there is a stiff climb to the finish which is on a seperate chute.

Overview
A right-handed track, galloping in nature and with a circumference of a mile and a half. The circuit is almost square, making for some pretty sharp bends, particularly on the home turn. With this in mind it can pay to follow nippy front runners with the ability to quicken, as they are often able to slip the field.
Despite the fact that there are no big races staged here, a bumper crowd is generally in attendance. There are no airs and graces, and Bank Holiday meetings are always popular with families.

Overview
An oval, left handed flat track measuring one mile and five furlongs, there are two straight six-furlong courses, one of which joins the round course four and a half furlongs out. The mile and a half start is on a spur past the winning post.
The galloping course suits the long striding individual, especially those who can stay.
It is also worth noting that when rain gets into the ground the stands side often rides faster and it is not unknown for jockeys to track over in search of success.
The hurdles course is situated inside the chase track and has sharp bends.

Overview
A right-handed undulating loop course, with a severe dip three furlongs from the finish and a steady uphill run to the line. Races over one mile three furlongs and upwards start in the home straight, run the reverse way up the straight, taking the lower bend around the loop before entering the home straight via the top bend. Ground has a tendency to ride very heavy in wet weather. On soft ground, high numbers have a marked advantage on the straight five and six furlong courses, which are fairly stiff.

Great Leighs became the UK’s first new racecourse in 80 years when opening in 2008.
The track will stage racing all year round - from summer days to floodlit winter nights - and also offer extensive entertainment packages, with bars and restaurants open long after racing has finished. In the spirit of the old Essex County Showground, outdoor events and concert extravaganzas are also planned.

Overview
A right-handed track with severe undulations. Racing on the Flat only, and this course is totally unsuited to the big, long-striding horse. Small, handy types who can maintain their balance downhill have the advantage here. The course often suits front runners, and the five furlong straight course is one of the fastest in the country so speed from the gate is essential.

Overview
Flat and National Hunt. This is a right-handed track of approximately one mile three furlongs in circumference and a distance from the home turn of two and a half furlongs, with very sharp turns and undulations. There is a seven furlong straight track on the Flat, although seven furlong races can also be run on the round course. On the jumping track there are run-ins from the final obstacle of 220 yards (chases) and 250 yards (hurdles). On both the flat and national hunt courses this is a venue where long-striding horses are at a disadvantage.
Folkestone, the only track in Kent, is now a member of the Arena Leisure Group of courses. Although top-class horses are rarely seen at this venue, it does provide plenty of competitive action throughout the year. The management are embarking on a strategy of improving the National Hunt programme over the next few years.

Stages racing under both codes. The Flat circuit is a left-handed track of almost two miles with a run-in of five furlongs. The course is best suited to a long-striding horse and a powerful galloper, with the accent on stamina and courage. Low numbers are marginally favoured on the round mile track.
The jumps course, a mainly flat track, has 11 fences to a circuit and a 240-yard run-in. The fences are more difficult than in former years and Town Moor is definitely not a place for the faint-hearted.

Overview
An extremely sharp, left-handed circuit just a mile in circumference. Stages Flat racing only. A low draw and early speed from the gate is essential over all distances up to a mile.
It is very difficult for runners to win that do not keep close to the rail throughout. With the horses galloping almost constantly on the turn, this is very much a course for specialists and the form cannot be relied upon elsewhere.

Overview
Stages racing under both codes. The Flat circuit is a left-handed oval of around two miles, with some quite severe undulations. All races up to a mile are run on the straight course which provides quite a stiff test. On the round course, the run-in is five furlongs and this is not an ideal place for front runners. On the straight course, high numbers have a distinct advantage when the stalls are on the stands side, especially on soft ground.
The jumps circuit has a run-in of 240 yards, but the undulations make this a less testing circuit and front runners have a fair record. The fences are quite stiff, and the ground can become very heavy in winter.

Stages racing both on the flat and over jumps. A very sharp, left-handed oval track, the Flat course is only nine furlongs in circumference, and the five-furlong track is all downhill.
The jumping circuit is ten furlongs, with a fairly long run-in of 240 yards. It is a good course for front-runners, and the fences are quite stiff. Established in 1783, this traditional course is not known for the high quality of racing but a warm and friendly atmosphere is always in attendance.

Flat: A right-handed pear shaped course measuring a mile and a half round. It is very undulating with a stiff three and a half furlong run-in, putting the emphasis very much on stamina. The six-furlong track begins on a chute and is on the turn throughout. High numbers are favoured, but in soft conditions jockeys tend to track over to the stands side in search of better ground.
National Hunt: Similar in confirmation to its flat counterpart, it provides a searching test and only those blessed with abundant stamina can expect to prevail.

Overview
A horseshoe shaped left-handed course measuring a mile and a half, consisting of easy turns with a run-in of three and a half furlongs.
Very undulating in nature, the track favours small well balanced types, especially front runners. It can be an advantage to be drawn low although the opposite is often true in soft going when runners track over to the stands side.
The course actually stands on a chalk base and does tend to drain very well.

Flat: A right-handed triangular shaped circuit of just over one mile and six furlongs, with a run-in of two and a half furlongs. Races up to and including one mile can take place on the straight course.
A stiff, galloping course, undulating in nature and with sweeping, easy bends. In large fields on the straight course the draw seems to favour those housed near either rail.
National Hunt: Same conformation as the flat, with the stiff uphill finish, allied to some quite demanding fences ensuring that form normally works out well, with top rated animals proving hard to beat.

Overview
Home of the Grand National and as such known the world over, the Merseyside venue presents an honest test these days since the fences were modified on the National course.
The circuit is triangular in shape and has a circumference of two miles and two furlongs.
There cannot be a more adrenalin pumping sight than watching the leaders in the most famous race in the world landing over the final fence to negotiate the 494 yards run-in complete with elbow.
The more conventional Mildmay course is rectangular in shape, stretching to 12 furlongs. The bends are sharp, favouring the handy, nippy sort rather than the big striding individual. The run-in is measured at 260 yards.
